Mystic Canyons

Wildlife and Ecology of the Mystic Canyons

The Mystic Canyons area is flush with ancient, primordial power. In addition to empowering the myriad spirits in the area, this power also affects more mundane creatures. Plants of all kinds grow faster , and are hardier than elsewhere; even the lowest animal is swifter, surer, stronger and more fearless. Animals in other areas make a point of avoiding humans, for example, wolves or bears. In the Mystic Canyons, however, those same animals show much less aversion and simple deterrents, such as campfires, may not be enough to deter hungry predators. In addition, dire animals of every kind are considerably more common. The pressure of natural selection and confluences of primal energy combine to make already fearsome animals even more so.

Most animals in the Mystic Canyons are under the auspices of the hierarchy of spirits. Many animals are watched over by multiple spirits; these spirits both protect the animals, and make use of their services. For example: A spirit of a forest might call upon a dire wolf to lead a wolf pack against an interloping woodcutter. The spirit would then be expected to care for and protect the wolves, and might incur a debt to Brother Deer to ensure that the packs would not lose members to starvation next winter. For most inhabitants of the Mystic Canyons, hunting and
predation in the Mystic Canyons is an immensely complex affair of debts and counter-debts.
